Convert PNG to WebP

This tool converts PNG images to WebP, which is the format to reach for when a picture has to travel over the web. WebP is the one lossy format here that still stores an alpha channel, so a logo keeps its transparent background while the file gets smaller. The conversion runs in your browser, and your image is never uploaded.

Questions

Does WebP keep transparency?
Yes, and that is the difference to JPG. WebP stores an alpha channel, so a logo or an icon stays free of a background.
How much smaller does the file get?
That depends on the picture. Photographic content shrinks a great deal, while a flat graphic with few colours is sometimes already small as a PNG. Lowering the quality from the default 90 trades detail for size.
Who can open a WebP file?
Every current browser and most current image programs. For a file that has to reach old software, JPG or PNG remains the safer choice.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens in your browser; the file never leaves your device.
