Convert PNG to AVIF
This tool converts PNG images to AVIF, a lossy format that still stores transparency. A photographic PNG shrinks dramatically, and a logo keeps its transparent background. What AVIF is less good at is fine coloured detail: it stores colour at a lower resolution than brightness, so thin coloured lines and small coloured text can soften. For a screenshot full of text, the PNG is often the better file. The conversion runs in your browser, and your image is never uploaded.

Questions
- Does AVIF keep transparency?
- Yes. AVIF stores an alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent, encoded at the same quality as the picture.
- Is the AVIF file lossless like the PNG?
- No. The conversion is lossy, which is where the small file comes from. The quality starts at 75; raise it for more detail, lower it for a smaller file.
- Is AVIF a good choice for screenshots?
- Not always. AVIF stores colour at half the resolution of brightness, so small coloured text and one pixel lines can look soft. Photos, illustrations with gradients and large images gain the most.
- Who can open an AVIF file?
- Every current browser, and more and more image programs. Where a file has to reach older software, PNG remains the safer choice.
- Is my image uploaded to a server?
- No. The conversion happens in your browser; the file never leaves your device.
