Questions
- Why does my iPhone write HEIC at all?
- Because it stores a photo in roughly half the bytes of a JPG at the same quality. That is a good trade on the phone and an awkward one everywhere else, which is why this tool exists.
- Do the colors change?
- They should not. An iPhone photo is usually in a wider color space than a JPG can describe, so GRID16 converts it to sRGB rather than copying the numbers across, which is what makes colors look oversaturated in tools that skip that step.
- Does my browser need to support HEIC?
- No. Only Safari reads HEIC on its own, so GRID16 brings its own decoder. That is a one time download of about 1.4 MB, and only on a HEIC tool.
- Why is my HDR photo refused?
- An HDR photo holds brightness a JPG has no way to express, and mapping it down is a judgement call GRID16 does not make for you. A wrong looking picture is worse than a clear no.
- Is my photo uploaded to a server?
- No. The conversion happens in your browser; the file never leaves your device.
