Format JSON
This tool reads a JSON file and writes it out again with the indentation you choose, which is the fastest way to make a minified file readable. The same setting works in the other direction: an indent of 0 puts everything back on one line. Formatting runs in your browser, and your file is never uploaded.

How it works
- 1 Choose a JSON file.
- 2 Set the indent between 0 and 8 spaces. 2 is the default, 0 minifies.
- 3 GRID16 parses and rewrites the file in your browser.
- 4 Download the result.
Questions
- Can it minify as well?
- Yes. An indent of 0 writes the whole document on one line, which is the same operation in the other direction. The scale goes up to 8 spaces.
- What happens with invalid JSON?
- The job stops and says so. The file has to parse before anything is written, so you learn that a comma is missing instead of receiving a half converted file.
- Does it change my data?
- The structure and the values stay, only the formatting is written anew. Numbers come out in the shortest form that means the same value, so 1.0 is written as 1.
- Is my file uploaded to a server?
- No. Formatting happens in your browser; the file never leaves your device.
